AN EXQUISITE RANGE OF TEXTILES AND WALL COVERINGS UNFOLDS IN HEWN’S NEW SPACE
Swathed in hand-painted silk and dotted with framed panels of embroidered wall coverings, an installation celebrating British design house Fromental makes for an artful entrance at Hewn’s newly re-envisioned showroom. Fromental’s marriage of classicism and cool embodies Hewn’s sensibility—an inviting aesthetic bridging contemporary and traditional—and sets the tone for an elegant new 3,500-square-foot fabric and wall covering space. Here, exposed brick walls provide a historic backdrop for a range of new fabric collections by local and international studios including Fermoie, Justin Van Breda, Michelle Pereira, and Peter Fasano. The added space brings the showroom’s footprint to 10,000 square feet, giving breathing room to new lines as well as to Hewn’s established roster of coveted furniture and lighting by designers like Ted Boerner, Gary Hutton, Ferrante, and Avrett.
“We wanted to create a stronger presence for fabrics and wall coverings,” says Hewn Co-founder Jeff Holt of the expansion. Holt and Co-founder Peter West’s first venture into textiles was the launch of their own signature fabric line in 2015. Adds West, “We’ve now gained 12-foot arched windows that flood the bays with natural light, so clients can appreciate a fabric’s true color and texture.” Two large alcoves with natural waxed-mahogany floors and walls washed in Benjamin Moore’s Dove White present fabrics in loose, elegant kerchief folds that make details like intriguing selvedges, stitching, and sumptuous finishes accessible to the touch.
The expansion also provided an opportunity to integrate HewnX—an adjacent showroom dedicated to Hewn’s most contemporary lines— into the main showroom, where cutting-edge and traditional pieces now affably mix. The sophisticated, open plan vignettes, Holt notes, “better reflect the eclectic way people really live.” Holt and West have also incorporated new furniture by New York-based John Lyle, lighting by San Francisco interiors firm Fisher Weisman (“Their one-of-a-kind seashell-encrusted lantern is a standout,” says Holt), and a collection of Jean-Michel Frank–inspired upholstered pieces by Coraggio.
Holt and West’s vision to bring together the best in fabrics and wall coverings in one place has taken shape in an airy, expansive space that perfectly expresses Hewn’s inimitable blend of elegance and edge. Observes Holt, “We finally feel complete.”
